Babywearing: Mei Tei

httpv://youtu.be/PnlC55jzVaY

Mei Tei’s, which are also known as Asian Style Carriers or ABC’s….are wonderful, fairly fool proof carriers that come in a wide range of fabrics to match every taste.  This particular carrier is a Wrapstar, and has a padded waist, padded shoulder straps and is lined with minky.  Wrapstars are no longer being made so if you have one…count yourself lucky.  They are beautiful pieces of art and are made with impeccable craftsmanship.   Also…I didnt specify in the video, but the lexi twist and knotting behind the back can ONLY be done with older children.  Not babies ;).

Mei Tei’s are one of my personal favorites….the right Mei Tei is comfortable for hours, and using one is much quicker then wrapping (although not as impressive) for those trips you dont have that extra couple minutes to wrap up a kid.  The wide variety of fabrics and additions make Mei Tei’s the perfect carrier for sharing.  One side for her…and one for him….or 2 for you! Even better!

People who make them:

Infantino makes a Mei Tei line…the Sash and Ecosash which is sold at Babies R Us or similar baby stores (usually).  They are very affordable…but as the old adage goes, you get what you pay for. Not many options either as far as fabrics, so if your looking for customizable this one isnt for you. They work….but they will never be as supportive as many of the other Mei Tei’s out there.  However you could do worse…and they are 100% better then the Bjorn or other similar carriers that suspend baby from the crotch. Baby should always be in a seated position with the knees above the hips.

Freehand is another good maker of Mei Tei’s.  They were once a WAHM business…turned mass produced carrier…because of that, the quality has taken a hit compared to what they once were…but they are still great carriers.  They also dont have a large selection of fabrics and for the price…you can get a custom Mei Tei elsewhere.  Many places online carrier them.

Babyhawks are a wonderful Mei Tei for people who are looking for a custom carrier.  You get to choose everything about your carrier…from the strap color, to the fabric, to the length of the straps…right down to if you want a toy loop or not.  There is so many option it boogles the mind.  Have fun playing with designing your carrier right on the site.  She even has Toddlerhawks, for those with really tall kids or extended babywearers. http://www.babyhawk.com/

Dream Carrier is another wonderful maker of Mei Tei’s who also makes variations of Mei Teis…buckle Teis and wrap conversions.  Her carriers are wonderfully supportive and next to Wrapstar….Dream Carriers are my favorite Mei Tei. http://dreamcarriersllc.wordpress.com/

I could go on and on all day about the different makers of Mei Tei’s.  There are about a bajillion and one so you will not be lacking for choice in the Mei Tei department.  Happy Babywearing!
