For the twins’ first birthday I wrote each of them a letter. I am not generally the sort of person who saves cards or other sentimental things, but I do plan on sharing all their first birthday cards with them someday and these letters will be in there as well.
You are one year old. A year ago you were born at 33 weeks and 2 days gestational age. You took a deep breath and started yelling. We heard you, I promise.
You are beautiful. I used to wonder whether you would be more beautiful than me and I can say without a doubt that yes you absolutely are. Your hair is short and brown and curly. It looks golden or copper in the sunlight. It’s soft and you like me to run my fingers through it while I nurse you to sleep.
Your eyes are stunning. They are big and beautiful. Your irises are a hazel/green color and your lashes are so thick and dark.
You are so strong. You’re very physically active and you’ve been jumping constantly for months. Maybe you’ll be an athlete. You are very comfortable in your body and you have a sort of grace that I’ve never seen before. You’re also determined. Before you figured out how to crawl on your hands and knees you “frog crawled” all over the place. Never one to wait, I’m sure you’ll be off and running in a week.
You are outgoing. You like to be noticed. You like to talk and to be praised for doing things. You love Annie, your daddy and food. Today you and your brother learned to slap each other’s hands and you both giggled. You like him to chase you down the hallway. He is getting faster, so you had better watch out.
I love you more than I can ever tell you. You’re a blessing and I’m so proud to call you my daughter. Happy first birthday.
You are one year old. A year ago you were born at 33 weeks and 2 days gestational age. One minute after your sister, you cried and I got to see you for about a second before they whisked you away.
You are so handsome. Your smile can light up a room. Your hair is long and blond. I’ll have to cut it soon. Your eyes are beautiful and blue. I never dreamed that I’d have a blue-eyed son.
You are deliberative. While your sister is seemingly leaps ahead of you, you watch and learn and then have a new skill almost overnight. You take your time, but when you’re ready to do something, you just do it.
You are sweet. You love snuggling when you wake up from a nap and your laugh is infectious. I loved your smiles before you got teeth, but I love your toothy smiles even more. You can make me act so silly just to entice a grin from you.
You love your sister so much. You watch her and follow her and get her to play games with you. I’m so excited to watch you wo grow together. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have such a perfect family.
I love you more than I can ever tell you. Our bond is strong and I’m so proud that I’ve been blessed with you as my son. Happy first birthday.
