How “The Squished Hippie” came to be

How the name came to be isnt a very interesting story…but the name “The Squished Hippie” has come to mean so much more then the unexciting reason I chose it.

I’ve always wanted to be a blogger…one of those well known ones like The Pioneer Women and Bakerella. After Squishybaby #4 was born I was part of a moms group that became known as the Bitter Betty’s and we started a blog (the group has since disbanded), and I needed a name. Mr. Squish came up with the name in the car to his mothers one evening. My email/screen name has always been Squishymommy (or some variation of it) and while I feel I identify as a hippie…my weird brand of parenting/living always lands me with the label of hippie from the “mainstream”. I embrace that term. Arm pit hair and all ;).

Now that I’ve been “The Squished Hippie” for a little over a year it’s really come to mean something more then just a name to me. My only wish is to feed my family good wholesome meals, with fresh ingredients and use non chemical everything….but I am squished into only being able to provide that about half of the time. In 4 years I have gone from being able to provide it 100% of the time to barely 50%. We make the same amount of money, we pay the same amount in bills…the only difference is gas and food prices have sky rocketed.

A fantastic example of this is meat. I have 3 grocery stores in my area…Sentry, Piggly Wiggly and Walmart. Sentry is the most expensive (but also the closest), I was there the other day getting the beef chuck steak for my Boeuf Bourguignon (recipe to come soon) and I just happened to glance at the veal roasts….$84 for a 5 lbs roast. I know I know…it’s veal, but still. Even a good beef roast is going to cost you $25+ and I spent $30 just on the steak for the aforementioned dish. That.is.crazy. The Pig is a bit cheaper all around, but….unfortunately none of them hold a candle to Walmart.

Now I know, I know….Walmart is the devil and believe me, I TOTALLY agree…but it’s the only way I can afford to fill in the gaps. And if you’ve EVER had Walmart meat you’ll know what a giant sacrifice this foodie is making. I’m a hippie being squished into mainstream tendencies due to monetary conditions beyond my control. Sounds all very official and what not….it’s really become a part of me though. I really identify with the name. It suits me.

That’s it in a nutshell. I guess not very exciting after all.

Hey! I understand this is somewhat off-topic but I had to ask.
Does operating a well-established website like yours
require a massive amount work? I am brand new to running a blog but I do write in my journal on a daily basis.
I’d like to start a blog so I can share my own experience and feelings online. Please let me know if you have any kind of suggestions or tips for brand new aspiring blog owners. Appreciate it!
