Coconut oil has been a staple in my home for such a long time. There are SO many different uses for it. It is literally a problem-solver for most anything; from hair to cellulite to cooking, coconut oil is your go-to.
There are three main types of coconut oil:
1. Refined– Tasteless and odorless. Excellent for cooking. Benefical for fatty acids, but does not offer the same health benefits as unrefined coconut oil.
2. Unrefined (Organic)– Labeled virgin or extra-virgin. No addition of any chemicals. More natural. Better for skin and hair.
3. Hydrogenated– Has additives to lengthen shelf life. Should be avoided.
Here are some (not all) ways that coconut oil can benefit your entire family:
Health Concerns (when taken internally):
Stretch Mark Cream
Moisturizer for Baby Skin (Xza wrote an article specifically on this HERE)
When Used Topically:
One of the best uses for coconut oil is to boost immunity. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, capric acid, and caprylic acid, which have antibacterial and antiviral properties and can, in turn, fight off illnesses in the body. Coconut oil can also aid in weight loss, as well. The types of fats that are in coconut oil are metabolized differently than other fats. It increases metabolism and helps burn more energy.
Another great use for coconut oil is in cooking. Coconut oil does not have trans fat or cholesterol. Just like olive oil, it has 120 calories per tablespoon. It is a healthy alternative to vegetable oil and can be used in any recipe.
Where to Buy:
You can find coconut oil almost anywhere. I mainly buy mine at Whole Foods and online HERE My favorite brand is Nature’s Way EfaGold and those seem to be the only two places that I can find it.
I love using coconut oil for my family. It is so natural and has SO many uses & benefits.
