Mom Monday (on a Friday!): MommyCon Obsessed!

What is all this talk of MommyCon? I hear it all over Facebook on pages like The Leaky Boob, The Badass Breastfeeder, Birth Without Fear, The Feminist Breeder, (the list goes on and on!!), and I am here to let you in on a little secret…it’s simply AH-mazing. The Mommy Dialogues have created an event for parents across the US to share their interest in babywearing, cloth diapering, natural parenting and everything in between. Xza and her team of mommy’s are planning conventions that will travel to Phoenix, Austin, Philadelphia, Portland and Kansas City in 2013 for their MommyCon Mini’s.

So what can you expect from purchasing a ticket? First, if you purchase your tickets during the “pre-sale” you will be invited to a play date that occurs the day before the convention. I will give you a heads up that you must become obsessed with stalking MommyCon and The Mommy Dialogues Facebook pages and even their Instagram’s so you do not miss out on the important email telling you to get your ticket NOW for the event; the playdate’s sell out FAST!! In fact, I’m pretty sure Kansas City has already sold out of their pre-sale tickets…I’m telling you this is the next “big thing”. These playdates are pretty awesome!! Las Vegas’ was with The Leaky Boob, and at Chicago’s everyone walked away with either a Beco or Ergo carrier. Next, you can expect a day of the most babywearing you’ve ever seen all in one place!! The Badass Breastfeeder put it perfectly, “I’ll bring you an army”. That is what MommyCon is; they are educating modern day parents of the strength and determination of parenting in the way that is best for our children.

I was lucky enough to spend this past Sunday enjoying Chicago’s MommyCon Mini. This is only their second event, the first being in Las Vegas a few months back, and I have to say that this is going to be a huge success. When we arrived we were greeted by Risa and her adorable daughter, Harper. Jessica and her son, Cormac, armed the wrap table. Alyssa helped out in the babywearing lounge where parents could experience one-on-one instruction of all types of carriers. Alyssa also gave us great instructions during the Car Seat Safety seminar and the Babywearing Workshop. Xza ran around directing everything and making sure all ran as planned, interacting with mommies and babies in-between (and of course planning the whole event). We heard from an IBCLC who gave us great insight on how to be successful at breastfeeding. MommyCon also presented us with a panel of professionals such as and OBGYN, CNM, and a Hypnobirthing Practicioner; the audience asked questions ranging from VBAC’s and HBAC’s, breech births, cord blood banking and placenta encapsulation. There was also a very informative Pediatrics Panel Discussion. Cutie Poops and Bottoms presented Cloth Diapering 101, and then for the 2 celebrities of the day we got to listen to the Feminist Breeder discuss finding the ideal birth team and Abby, The Badass Breastfeeder sweep the crowd off their feet with her personal and uplifting speech. Seriously, Abby got a roaring cheer and round of applause…I will admit that I got teary with the power behind her speech of bringing an army to defend the right to nurse in public. It was awe-inspiring! This is just the speakers; I haven’t even got to the tiny details of MommyCon such as: the booths, nursing lounge and fabulous food truck that was provided, and of course the giveaways of over $4000 in baby gear!!

MommyCon is the beginning of something special and although they are still learning from every show on what works and what doesn’t the spirit behind what they are bringing is real and incredibly informative to us that look at parenting in “unique perspectives”. I encourage anyone to go to a MommyCon located near you, and don’t worry to those that are too far away; this is the beginning of something super special and the wait is definitely worth it.

*I was not paid or solicited in anyway by MommyCon to give this review; I simply am a little “MommyCon Obsessed”.
